Three Years of Space Stories in Kids Magazine Anorak
12 January 2017

Space is Fun: a fitting title for a section in children’s magazine Anorak, a youth-focused magazine which encourages a sense of wonder and imagination. In collaboration with Universe Awareness, ‘Space Cadet’ Allison Hill has been writing space-related articles and texts for Anorak magazine for the last three years.

Allison is a PhD student of Extragalactic astronomy: high redshift galaxies (far away) from when the universe was just a couple of billion years old. Since 2014, she has written various articles for the space section in Anorak, aptly named ‘Space is Fun’. During that time, she has covered subjects ranging from the importance of astronomy for plants and nature, to answering questions sent in by young readers, like: “If one were to colonize one planet, which one should we choose and why?” The articles are accompanied by imaginative illustrations that really make the content pop.

Besides sharing knowledge to inspire and educate children with astronomy topics, Allison herself was also inspired by writing about astronomy: “I have learned how to better simplify my language for kids! I have also learned a few astronomy facts that were new to me when researching questions and topics for the articles. Being able to communicate astronomy to a general audience reminds me of the awe I had for the subject in the first place.” Writing for Anorak has earned Allison the honorary title of ‘Space Cadet’.

“The very nature of Anorak magazine is very open-ended and covers a wide range of subjects. Anything that can inspire the imagination, and teach children about the amazing world around them is fair game!” - Allison Hill, writer for Anorak: The Happy Mag for Kids, from Universe Awareness. The term 'Anorak' refers to a person who has a very strong interest in niche subjects. The magazine touches on all subjects of life, like science, literature, and more: “Anorak encourages a sense of wonder and imagination which I think is a necessary part of any childhood. And the illustrations are just beautiful! Writing for their excellent ‘Space is Fun’ section has been a pleasure,” says Allison. The Happy Mag for Kids offers timeless articles that, combined with the artwork, make this magazine into a great collector’s item.

Anorak magazine is published four times a year on recycled paper with vegetable ink. The ‘happy mag for kids’ focuses on boys and girls aged between 6 and 12 years old, but can also be enjoyed by the whole family. For more information about The Happy Mag for Kids, please visit .
